The VI Peel, Explained: Your 30-Minute Reset Button
If you've been scrolling peel content and wondering whether it's worth the shedding week — let's get into it. The VI Peel is one of the most-requested treatments in our Walnut Creek studio, and it's earned it.
So What Is It, Actually?
The VI Peel by VI Derm is a medical-grade chemical peel — meaning it's considerably stronger than what you're buying at Sephora, but formulated to be far gentler than the peels your mom warned you about. It's designed to be safe and effective across a wide range of skin types, which matters, because plenty of resurfacing treatments aren't.
Here's the short list of what it targets:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage and pigmentation
- Acne and acne scarring
- Melasma
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Enlarged pores
The Ingredients Doing the Heavy Lifting
The formula is a blend of TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C. In plain English: it penetrates the outer layers of damaged skin, kicks cellular turnover into gear, stimulates collagen underneath, and then — over the next several days — the tired old surface sheds and the fresh stuff underneath finally gets its turn.
What the Week Actually Looks Like
Day 0: You're in and out in about 30 minutes. Expect a mild tingling or warming sensation while it's on. You'll leave with the solution still on your skin plus a tailored aftercare kit — yes, you're going home like that.
Days 2–3: Peeling begins. Skin may feel tight and look slightly darker right before it starts to shed. This is normal. This is the treatment working.
Days 3–7: The shed. Do not pick. We mean it, do not pick.
Day 7 and beyond: Brighter, smoother, clearer. This is the part you booked for.
Most clients carry on with their normal week. That said — if you have a wedding, a shoot, or a first date on the calendar, plan around it. Book your peel 10 to 14 days out, not three.
Prep Like a Pro
Stop retinoids and exfoliants (glycolic, salicylic) 5 to 7 days beforehand, keep skin well hydrated, and skip tanning beds and direct sun. Tell us about every medication you're on — especially antibiotics, Accutane within the past six months, and anything that increases sun sensitivity. Had Botox or filler recently? We'll wait two weeks. And no shaving or waxing the area for 24 hours before.
Aftercare, Non-Negotiable Edition
Gentle cleanser. Generous moisturizer. No actives for 5 to 7 days. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day, indoors included. Makeup can go back on after 24 to 48 hours — non-comedogenic and fragrance-free only. Most people return to their full routine around day 7 to 10, reintroducing products one at a time. Light peels can be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks.
