Let's Tox About It: Your Honest Guide to Neurotoxins

Botox is the treatment everyone's heard of and nobody fully understands. So let's clear it up — no mystique, no pressure.

What It Actually Does

Neurotoxins have been used medically since the 1970s. Safe and highly effective, treatments like Botox®, Jeuveau®, Xeomin®, Daxxify®, and Dysport® give skin a smooth, renewed appearance that still looks like you. Zero downtime required.

The mechanism: they block the nerve signals that trigger muscle movement. Softer movement means existing wrinkles relax and new ones are prevented from etching in. That prevention piece is why so many people start in their late twenties and thirties — you're not chasing lines, you're staying ahead of them.

It's Not Only Cosmetic

Tox is also commonly used for a range of functional concerns:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Jaw tension and TMJ symptoms
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Facial muscle tension causing headaches

If you've been clenching your jaw through every deadline, that's worth a conversation at your consultation.

The Appointment

Quick. A few tiny injections, typically under 30 minutes. Most clients describe it as a tiny pinch — the needle is small, it goes in smoothly, and the product is injected fast. Numbing agents typically aren't used.

Timeline: Noticeable results around days 5 to 7, with full results at day 14. So no, it's not broken on day three. Be patient.

Longevity: Roughly 3 to 6 months, depending on the area treated, your muscle activity, and how your body responds.

Downtime: Virtually zero — the original lunchtime procedure. Some redness or swelling at injection sites usually settles within a few hours. Minor bruising is rare.

Before You Come In

  • Skip makeup — we need to see your lines clearly to plan placement
  • Book at least two weeks before any important event
  • No alcohol for 24 hours prior
  • Pause Retin-A, tretinoin, and retinoids for three days
  • Arrive with clean skin

Clients who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for neurotoxin treatment.

After

No makeup right away. Stay upright for four hours. Skip exercise for 24 hours (walking is fine) and alcohol for 24 hours. Don't massage the area — including heavy serum or moisturizer application — for four to six hours. And no facials for one week.

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin — Actually Different?

They're all neurotoxin injectables used to treat and prevent wrinkles, but their chemical compositions differ slightly. Different onset speeds, different spread characteristics, different personalities. Your injector will walk you through which one suits your muscles and your goals — that's a real conversation, not a coin flip.

Risks, Plainly

These are very common, low-risk procedures. The most reported side effects are headaches, minor bruising, and swelling at the injection site, though these are rare. Your nurse injector will cover every potential risk before anything happens.
